Another territorial clash between males

Image
Yesterday (29-3-2020) I witnessed another serious fight between two males. The GPS-tagged male is a bird born in 2015 that settled in August 2017 and since then breeds. Last year he raised two chicks successfully for the first time, they are both GPS-tagged two and still alive at the moment of writing.  As long as the birds are close to each other, no one can make strong diving flights to injure the opponent. Secondary 1 in the right wing is gone for the GPS-tagged male. Moult is unusual at this time of the year so it was probably broken/lost during the fight.  Face-to-face  The GPS tagged male is the only bird in our study with a name, Ferdinand.  The challenger chasing the local.  The local swoops over the challenger  And another time  The local black kite that nests close by also joined the fight
